LOSS OF STRENGTH BY PLANETS
We have learnt how to calculate the strength of planets in infancy or in old age. Further, the planets lose strength because of the following reasons:
a) A planet will lose strength to the extent of 75% if its mooltrikona sign house is afflicted. The loss of strength can be judiciously adjusted proportionately to the extent of affliction and to the strength of the lord of the house.
b) A weak planet placed in an afflicted house will lose strength to the extent of 75%.
c) An otherwise strong planet placed in a non mooltrikona sign afflicted house will lose strength to the extent of 50%. Such a planet may give good results in the first place and will cause setbacks later.
d) A closely afflicted weak planet will lose strength to the extent of 75%.
e) A closely afflicted otherwise strong planet will lose strength to the extent of 50%. Such a planet will give good results in the first place and will cause setbacks later.
f) A planet becoming weak due to close combustion will lose strength to the extent of 75% if the Sun is a functional malefic planet. Where the Sun is a functional benefic and it causes combustion to another planet, the planet will become 50% weak for the purpose of transit affliction. A combust planet in its sign of debilitation and placed in a malefic house will have only 10% power.
g) When planets are placed in the malefic houses, they generally lose strength by 50% besides suffering through the significations of the malefic house. The placement in the sixth house can involve the person in disputes, debts and can cause ill health. The placement in the eighth house can cause serious obstructions for the significations ruled by the planet. The placement in the twelfth house can cause expenses and losses for the significations of the planet.
h) When planets are placed in their signs of debilitation, they lose strength by 50%. When planets are placed in their signs of debilitation in both the birth chart and navamsa, they lose strength by 75%.
i) If in the Rasi chart a planet is badly placed and at the same time debilitated in
navamsa it would lose strength to the extent of 60%.
j) A badly placed planet in its sign of debilitation will lose its power by 75%.
k) A planet debilitated in navamsa would lose power by 25%.
GAIN OF STRENGTH BY PLANETS THROUGH ASPECTS AND CONJUNCTIONS:
An exact conjunction or aspect by a strong functional benefic planet raises the strength of a well placed planet by 50%.
An exact cnjunction or aspect of functional benefic planets in malefic house(s) can also raise the strength of the planet by about 25%.
A close conjunction or aspect of functional benefic planets in malefic house(s) can also raise the strength of the planet by about 12.5%.
The impact of conjunction and aspect by a strong functional benefic planet remains within an orb of 5 degrees and is at the rate of 10% per degree. At exact conjunction/aspect the impact is 50% and at a longitudinal distance of 5 degree aspect/conjunction the impact becomes zero.
An exact conjunction or aspect by a weak functional benefic planet raises the strength of the planet by 12.5% - just marginal. This benefit is only applicable for exact conjunction or aspect.
For the purposes of measuring the strength of a planet or the house, we first analyze the natal and transit strength. Then when reading the results of a planet, for any particular time, we also consider the transit strength of the planet besides the natal strength of the planet. If a planet is strong in the natal chart but is weak in its transit strength, it will not be able to show its results as a strong planet when it is weak in transit.
Let us see an example:
STRENGTH OF PLANETS
Here the Sun is badly placed, in old age and its dispositor is weak. First we identify its old age strength which is 83%. Then we calculate its bad placement strength by calculating the 50% that is the strength would be 83% / 2 = 41.5%. However, the Sun's strength cannot be more that of the strength of Mercury, its dispositor which is 25% as explained below.
In this chart Mercury is placed in an afflicted house. Its power would be limited to 25%.In this chart the Moon is strong. Its strength is 100%.
In this chart Mars is in infancy, its mooltrikona sign house is afflicted and its dispositor is weak. Its strength would be 91% x 1.25 (for being placed in Leo sign) divided by 75% as its mooltrikona sign is afflicted, which= 28.44. Its strength cannot exceed the strength of its dispositor, the Sun, which is 25%.
Jupiter is in old age to the extent of 8%. Its strength would be 92% (100-8). As it is placed in a Sun like house, its strength is increased by 25%, it gains another 25% for being a Sun like planet, which becomes 143.75% (92%+25%+25%), but the the final power cannot exceed 100%. So, its final power is restricted to 100%.
The most effective point of the mooltrikona sign house of Venus is afflicted. Its strength would be 25%. As it is placed in a Sun like house, its strength is increased by 25% further. Its final strength would be 31.25%.
Saturn is placed in an afflicted house, its dispositor is weak and Saturn is closely afflicted. Its strength would be 25%.
For Rahu and Ketu we only see the strength of their dispositors. We do not calculate their strength. We see if they are causing close affliction to houses / planets in the birth chart and whether they are badly placed. We also know that if Rahu / Ketu are well placed, are not causing close afflictions in the birth chart and their dispositors are strong, then they give good results for materialistic pursuits of the person.
In this case Rahu and Ketu are placed in afflicted houses and their dispositors are weak. No good results can be expected from these planets in their sub periods.
STRENGTH OF HOUSES
For the mooltrikona sign houses, the strength remains same as for their lords, as calculated above.
Let us see another example: STRENGTH OF PLANETS Here the Sun is badly placed, in infancy and its dispositor is weak. First we identify its infancy strength which is 18%. Then we calculate its bad placement strength by calculating the 50% that is the strength would be, which is 18% / 2 = 9.0%. The Sun is in debilitation in both the Rasi and navamsa charts, thus it loses strength by 75%. For these debilitations its 9% strength goes further down by 75%. The strength of the Sun works out as 2.25%. It is further brought down into a negative value as the mooltrikona sign of the Sun is afflicted. This person consistently faced setbacks in his professional ventures. In this chart the Moon is strong. Its strength is 100%. It is a Sun-like planet which enhances its impact. He belongs to a resourceful family and has strong mental faculties which helped him in getting a professional qualification. In this chart Mars is placed in the eleventh house. As its mooltrikona house which is the sixth house is closely afflicted by Ketu from the tenth house Mars loses strength, falling to 40% (100-60%. 60% represents the 4 degrees affliction). Its strength cannot exceed the strength of its dispositor, Mercury which is 42.5%. So, the strength of Mars is the lower quantity of the two which is 40%. Venus is placed in infancy in the ascendant and the most effective point of its mooltrikona sign house is afflicted. Its infancy strength is 37% which is further reduced due to affliction to its mooltrikona sign house which would be 60% of 37% being lost. Its final strength is 15%.
Jupiter is badly placed. Its strength would be 50% and it has an additional strength of 25% for being a Sun like planet which is 75% (50+25%). Jupiter's mooltrikona house (the second house) is closely afflicted, therefore Jupiter's strength is reduced by 60% (75%-15% as the affliction to its mooltrikona house is of more than 1 degree difference) which comes out to =30% (40% of 75%). But as it cannot exceed the power of its dispositor, Venus, its power would be restricted to 15%.
In this case Rahu and Ketu are placed in good houses but they are afflicting the MEPs of 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th houses closely making their lords weak. No good results can be expected from these planets in their sub periods. STRENGTH OF HOUSES For the mooltrikona sign houses, the strength remains same as for their lords, as calculated above.
The non-mooltrikona signs are present in second, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth houses. Strong Jupiter influences the most effective point (MEP) of the non mooltrikona sign ninth house and benefits it to the extent of 10%. The rest of the non mooltrikona sign houses are not receiving any close aspect - benefic or malefic. So, as a house, their strength remains 100%.
The strength of Mercury is 50% as Mercury is combust and the Sun is a functional benefic planet. Its mooltrikona house is afflicted by 6th lord Mars by more than 4 degrees difference. Therefore its strength is reduced by another 15% (75%-60% due to about one degree affliction). So, its final strength is 42.5% (50-15%)
Saturn is badly placed, debilitated, in an afflicted house and its dispositor is weak. The old age strength of Saturn is 49 rounded to 50%. It is reduced by 50% for its bad placement, which brings its value down to 25%. It is further reduced due to debilitation by 50% which comes to =12.5%. Its own mooltrikona house is also afflicted by the nodes which reduces its strength by another 60%. Therefore its strength is brought down to 5% (40% of 12.5). As the strength of its dispositor, Mars is more than its own strength, the strength of Saturn remains at 5%.
For Rahu and Ketu we only see the strength of their dispositors. We do not calculate their strength. We see if they are causing close affliction to houses / planets in the birth chart and whether they are badly placed. We also know that if Rahu/Ketu are well placed, are not causing close afflictions in the birth chart and their dispositors are strong, then they give good results for materialistic pursuits of the person.
The non-mooltrikona signs are present in the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth houses. None of the functional benefic planets are on the MEP, therefore no additional strength is possible. Functional Malefic Planet Mars is causing a mild affliction with a four degree distance from the MEP. It afflicts only one non mooltrikona house, the fifth house which reduces its strength by 25%. The rest of the non mooltrikona houses remain at 100% strength.
